Curriculum
Our residents get maximum exposure to all subspecialties of Internal Medicine in the hospital and outpatient settings through a series of service rotations. Teaching faculty in the Internal Medicine and subspecialty areas (infectious disease, pulmonary/critical care, cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, etc.) are passionate about academic excellence and are very supportive of our residency training program.

Medicine wards
There are three teaching teams. The Red and Blue teams consist of two PGY-2s, one supervising resident, medical students and an Internal Medicine board-certified attending. The Green Team consists of 1-2 senior residents and their attending. This experience is geared toward ensuring that residents gain autonomy by managing their own patients in a hospital setting.
Medical ICU
Our residents receive six months of ICU training in their three years of training, which prepares them to take care of critically ill patients. There are rotating faculty who are trained and board certified in pulmonary critical care and critical care medicine, ensuring a well-rounded experience. The pharmacy team rounds with the MICU team and is an integral part of the ICU experience. The program has a dedicated ICU curriculum developed by one of our Pulmonary/Critical Care faculty. Every resident has a great opportunity to perform procedures (intubations, central lines, A-lines, LPs, paracentesis, and thoracentesis) with attending supervision. The ICU team also responds to all codes within the hospital.
Continuity clinic
The program uses a 4+1 schedule, which enables the residents to have a dedicated week of continuity clinic. The residents are grouped into cohorts, which rotate weekly. Having this structure allows for patient continuity and establishes solid physician-patient rapport.
The program works closely with the medicine wards teaching teams to allow for close post-hospitalization and discharge follow-up of patients. The program is affiliated with Palm Beach Atlantic University pharmacy school, which is an integral part of our Continuity Clinic. The clinic has a pharmacist preceptor, pharmacy residents and pharmacy students who rotate 2-3 times a week.
This experience benefits our patients by addressing questions, polypharmacy, and medication adherence by providing extensive counseling, while at the same time enhancing the ambulatory experience for our IM residents. Having the Palm Beach Atlantic University pharmacy school in the clinic with our residents fosters additional learning and research/academic opportunities. Some of the educational activities in the clinic are:
- Dedicated ambulatory curriculum
- Weekly journal club
- PEAC-John’s Hopkins modules
- Weekly ambulatory topic
- Pharmacy presence
Subspecialty Rotations and Electives
- Addiction Medicine
- Cardiology
- Endocrinology

- Geriatrics

Teaching conferences
Morning report
Morning report takes place every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 – 8:30 am.
Noon conferences
There is a daily noon conference from 12 – 1 pm with didactics geared toward core rotations and Internal Medicine specialties including Cardiology, Nephrology, Infectious Disease, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Geriatrics, Palliative Care and Case Presentations.
Continuity clinic didactics
The residents who are scheduled for their continuity clinic week will have a journal club that will be presented by them and assigned ambulatory topics.
Morbidity and Mortality Conference
The purpose of the Morbidity and Mortality Conference is to introduce our residents to multidisciplinary discussions on patient safety and increase quality in clinical practice. The conference also provides a forum to teach curriculum on quality improvement by following a step-wise process, which fosters a climate of open discussion about medical errors. These conferences are scheduled once a month in lieu of a noon conference.
Board review
Faculty led MKSAP board review takes place Fridays from 12 – 1:30 pm. Resident-led board review takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 – 1:30 pm.
Intern Boot Camp
The whole month of July is dedicated to our new PGY-1s to go over the common topics in the Internal Medicine Specialty and prepare them for a smooth transition into residency. The Intern Boot Camp will take place daily from 12 – 1 pm.
